Ultrasound diagnostics
Ultrasonic diagnostics, also known as sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce…

CT – computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic method that uses X-rays to create detailed, three-dimensional images of internal organs and structures. During the scanning process, the patient is placed on a table that moves slowly through a cylindrical machine, through which X-rays pass from multiple angles. A special program then combines the resulting images to create a three-dimensional image of the inside of the body. CT is used in the diagnosis of various health problems, including the detection of tumors, traumatic injuries, blood clots and other conditions. It is important to note that CT uses X-rays, which can represent a certain dose of radiation, so its use must be carefully considered in relation to the benefits and risks.

In the Atrium Polyclinic, a CT scan of the abdomen is performed on a modern CT scanner Toshiba Aquilion Prime 160 slice.
An abdominal CT scan is a radiological examination in which a CT device is used to scan the abdomen (the part of the body between the lungs and the pelvis, the stomach area) in layers, and computer processing of the data provides diagnostic information about pathological changes throughout the abdomen. With the use of the most advanced software, 3D reconstruction is also possible, which provides a more detailed view of all regions.
Before the examination, the medical staff will advise the patient to remove jewelry, piercings, or any other metal objects from the body. No special preparations are required for the CT scan of the abdomen.
During the examination, the patient lies in a supine position with a head support.
During the scan, the patient is alone in the room with the CT device. The examination is performed on the Toshiba Aquilion Prime 160-slice device.
After positioning the patient, the radiology engineer plans the scanning field on the abdomen. The device is shaped like a large ring containing an X-ray tube and various detectors. The table on which the patient lies moves back and forth. During the examination, it is very important that the patient remains completely still, as even the slightest movements affect the quality of the scan.
Sometimes, the medical staff in our Polyclinic will initiate the process of injecting contrast medium to make the images produced by the CT device clearer.
The room is equipped with sound, and the entire examination is monitored by the radiology engineer who performs it.
If you are planning a pregnancy, it is best to have the examination done within the first 10 days of your menstrual cycle to avoid any harmful effects of radiation on a possible early pregnancy.
When is an abdominal CT with contrast performed?
CT of the abdomen with contrast is a radiological examination used for detailed imaging of the internal organs and structures of the abdomen using X-rays and contrast medium. This examination is usually performed when the doctor suspects certain conditions or pathological changes in the abdomen, such as tumors, infections, or bleeding.
The main difference between abdominal CT with and without contrast is in the quality and detail of the obtained images. The contrast medium is used to enhance the visibility of certain structures, such as blood vessels or tumors, making them easier to identify in the images. Without contrast, images can provide basic information, but smaller changes or pathologies that could be important for diagnosis may be missed.
During the examination, the contrast medium is usually injected intravenously, and the patient will be monitored by medical staff to track any possible reaction to the contrast.
NOTE: The contrast medium, which is injected intravenously into the patient’s body, is used only in cases when the doctor has indicated it and decided that there are no contraindications for the administration of the contrast medium.
