CT colonoscopy

CT – computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic method that uses X-rays to create detailed, three-dimensional images of internal organs and structures. During the scanning process, the patient is placed on a table that moves slowly through a cylindrical machine, through which X-rays pass from multiple angles. A special program then combines the resulting images to create a three-dimensional image of the inside of the body. CT is used to diagnose a variety of health problems, including detecting tumors, traumatic injuries, blood clots, and other conditions. It is important to note that CT uses X-rays, which can represent a certain dose of radiation, so its use must be carefully considered in relation to the benefits and risks.

When is CT colonoscopy used?

CT colonoscopy is a diagnostic method in which a CT scanner is used to obtain a detailed image of the colon (intestines) and rectum. CT colonoscopy differs from a standard abdominal CT scan in that gas is administered to the patient during imaging, which allows for a more detailed display of the intestinal wall structure.

The most common reason a person is referred for CT colonoscopy is due to possible polyps or cancer in the intestine or rectum. Polyps are often harmless, but some polyps can develop into cancerous tissue, which is why it is important to perform adequate diagnostics in time. CT colonoscopy is performed on patients who experience intestinal irritation, weight loss, constipation, or blood in the stool.

Patient preparation for CT colonoscopy

It is very important to empty the intestines before CT colonoscopy imaging to achieve the best visualization of the intestines. To completely empty the intestines before imaging, the patient receives instructions on which foods to avoid, and a laxative is prescribed to cleanse the intestines.
It is very important to take the prescribed laxatives in consultation with the engineer or doctor to ensure clear images.

Examination procedure

The patient lies on their side on the CT table, after which a small flexible tube is inserted into the rectum to gently inject gas into the large intestine. The gas is injected using a small pump and helps to expand the intestines and remove folds in the intestines that could hide polyps or growths.
During this process, it is possible to feel mild pain or discomfort, as well as the need to go to the toilet. Throughout the entire imaging, the engineer monitors the patient’s condition. The table then moves and passes through the CT scanner, which uses X-rays and detectors to form an image. CT imaging is painless, and X-rays cannot be felt.

At the end of the imaging, the patient remains on the CT table while the engineer carefully checks the image, and additional imaging may be done if needed. After completing the imaging, the patient can get dressed without hindrance.


The complete imaging process takes between 30-40 minutes.
