Poliklinika Atrijum CT dijagnostika

CT scan of the pelvis

CT – computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic method that uses X-rays to create detailed, three-dimensional images of internal organs and structures. During the scanning process, the patient is placed on a table that moves slowly through a cylindrical machine, through which X-rays pass from multiple angles. A special program then combines the resulting images to create a three-dimensional image of the inside of the body. CT is used in the diagnosis of various health problems, including the detection of tumors, traumatic injuries, blood clots and other conditions. It is important to note that CT uses X-rays, which can represent a certain dose of radiation, so its use must be carefully considered in relation to the benefits and risks.

In the Atrium Polyclinic, CT of the pelvis is performed on a modern CT scanner Toshiba Aquilion Prime 160 slice. CT of the pelvis on the Toshiba Aquilion 160 slice device has several advantages compared to other CT devices:

  • High resolution: Toshiba Aquilion 160 slice has high image resolution.
  • Scanning speed: Thanks to the large number of detectors (in this case 160 slices), scanning is faster than on devices with fewer “slices”. This reduces the risk of motion artifacts, improves image quality, and reduces patient radiation exposure.
  • Low radiation dose: Advanced image processing techniques, such as iterative reconstruction and the use of low-dose protocols, reduce the radiation dose needed to obtain high-quality images.
  • Accurate diagnostics: High resolution and scanning speed enable precise diagnostics.
  • Patient comfort: Faster scanning reduces the time spent in the scanner, improving patient comfort and reducing anxiety.

Why is CT pelvis performed?

The pelvic bones are very important, considering that they connect the torso with the lower limbs. The pelvis and pelvic bones are divided into the greater and lesser pelvis.
CT of the pelvis (CT abdominopelvic) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that uses X-rays and computer technology to create a detailed image of the pelvic region. This procedure provides a detailed and precise examination of the pelvic bones, organs, and tissues, which can be useful for diagnosing and monitoring various health conditions, such as tumors, intestinal inflammation, kidney and bladder stones, injuries, and other disorders in the pelvis.

Before the examination, the patient will be instructed to lie on the CT table, and contrast medium will be applied to improve the visibility of the pelvic structures. During the procedure, X-ray beams rotate around the pelvis and record hundreds of cross-sections. The computer then processes the obtained data and creates a three-dimensional image of the pelvic region, which the doctor can view on a monitor.
CT of the pelvis is a fast and precise diagnostic method that is very useful in detecting a wide range of problems in the pelvic region. However, due to radiation exposure, frequent repetition of the examination is not recommended without medical indications.

Advantages of CT pelvis include:

Precise diagnostics: CT of the pelvis can detect various changes in the pelvic area, including tumors, bone abnormalities, bleeding, inflammation, and infections.
Quantitative assessment: CT of the pelvis enables quantitative assessment of bone density, which is useful for diagnosing osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Speed: CT of the pelvis is usually performed quickly and provides immediate results.

However, CT pelvis also has some risks and limitations:

Possible inaccurate diagnoses: CT of the pelvis may give inaccurate diagnoses if the images are unclear or not precise enough.
Limitations for certain patients: CT of the pelvis is not recommended for pregnant women and people who have kidney problems or allergies to contrast media.
It is important to talk to the doctor about all the benefits and risks of pelvic CT and decide together on the best option for diagnosis and treatment.
