Kolposkopija

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a specialized gynecological examination that enables a detailed assessment of the condition of the cervix. This method is used for the early detection of changes in the mucosa that may not be visible during a standard gynecological examination and represents a key preventive and diagnostic procedure.

The examination is usually recommended after a gynecological examination or a PAP test, especially when changes are detected that require more thorough analysis.

How is colposcopy performed?

Colposcopy is performed using a special microscope (colposcope) that provides a magnified view of the cervix. During the procedure:

  • The physician carefully examines the surface of the cervix and vaginal mucosa.
  • Any changes that may indicate infections, inflammatory processes, or precancerous lesions are identified.
  • If necessary, a sample is taken for laboratory analysis (biopsy).

The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and typically lasts 5 to 10 minutes, causing minimal discomfort to the patient.

Why is colposcopy important?

Colposcopy enables early detection of abnormalities that, if not recognized in time, may lead to more serious conditions. This examination allows:

  • Timely identification of changes on the cervix.
  • Prevention of progression of potentially dangerous conditions.
  • Precise determination of the need for additional diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.

When combined with regular gynecological examinations and the PAP test, colposcopy provides the safest method for monitoring cervical health.
