Color Doppler of Extremity Arteries and Veins

Color Doppler is an advanced ultrasound method that enables examination of blood flow through the arteries and veins of the arms and legs in real time. This examination utilizes high-frequency ultrasound waves and a special color display technique (Color Doppler) to clearly visualize blood flow velocity and direction, presence of narrowing, thrombi, or reflux (reverse flow). The examination is completely painless, non-invasive, and safe, without radiation use.

The examination is indicated for patients experiencing pain, swelling, coldness, or numbness in arms and legs, where suspicion of arterial narrowing (stenosis), venous thrombosis, or chronic venous problems exists. It is also used for patients with varicose veins, after injuries, surgeries, clots, or as part of monitoring chronic circulatory diseases, such as diabetes and arterial hypertension.

What Can Color Doppler Detect?

Color Doppler of arteries and veins precisely depicts the condition of blood vessels, enabling identification of arterial narrowing, presence of blood clots (thrombi), varicose veins, reflux, and other vascular disorders. The examination also provides information on blood flow velocity and detects potential abnormalities in peripheral arteries and veins, which is crucial for timely diagnosis and prevention of complications.

How is the Examination Performed?

The examination lasts about 20–30 minutes, depending on the region and case complexity. The patient sits or lies down, and the radiologist applies gel to the area being examined and systematically scans the arteries and veins of the arms or legs with the probe. During the examination, blood flow is displayed in color and black-and-white image (B-mode), and as needed, flow velocity measurements and identification of narrowing or thrombi are performed. The report is available immediately, with recommendations for further diagnostics or therapy.

Advantages of Color Doppler Examination

The main advantages are safety, painlessness, precision, and ability for instantaneous insight into circulatory status. The examination is repeatable, requires no preparation, and is ideal for monitoring recovery after vascular injuries, surgeries, or therapy. Additionally, Color Doppler assists in preventing complications and planning appropriate treatment for chronic venous and arterial disorders.
