Wrist and Hand Ultrasound

Wrist and hand ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic examination that enables detailed visualization of tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, and joints of the hand and wrist. This method uses high-resolution ultrasound waves and provides clear insight into the condition of soft tissues, inflammation, and injuries, without radiation exposure. Ultrasound proves ideal for athletes, recreational participants, workers using hands in daily activities, and individuals experiencing pain, stiffness, or swelling.

The examination is recommended for wrist pain, swelling, limited motion, finger clicking, or reduced hand strength. It is also indicated for suspicion of tendon inflammation (tendinitis), ligament rupture, carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglia, bursitis, or injuries from falls, impacts, or strain during sports activities. Ultrasound enables timely identification of complaint causes and planning of appropriate therapy.

What Does Wrist and Hand Ultrasound Reveal?

Ultrasound precisely depicts the condition of extensor and flexor tendons, carpal joint ligaments, muscle structures, bursae, and joint spaces. The examination detects inflammatory changes, tendon thickening, partial or complete ruptures, ganglia, fluid effusions, and degenerative joint changes. Dynamic assessment during movement enables identification of functional problems not visible at rest.

How is the Examination Performed?

The examination lasts about 10–15 minutes; the patient sits or lies down, and the radiologist applies gel to the hand and wrist. The probe systematically examines all tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissues. During the examination, hand and finger movements may be performed for dynamic functional assessment. Findings are available immediately and provide clear guidelines for further therapy.

Advantages of Wrist and Hand Ultrasound

Ultrasound is safe, precise, and painless, enabling immediate diagnosis and unlimited repeatability as needed. It represents an ideal method for monitoring recovery after injuries, therapy, or surgical interventions. Additionally, ultrasound proves extremely useful in sports and work-related hand injuries, as well as chronic inflammatory conditions of tendons and ligaments.
