Ultrasound is a non-invasive test, more precisely a medical diagnostic method. The ultrasound image is also called a sonogram. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images or videos of internal organs or other soft tissues, such as blood vessels, in real time. Ultrasound enables healthcare professionals to “see” details of soft tissues inside your body without making any incisions. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation. Although most people associate ultrasound with pregnancy, healthcare professionals use ultrasound for various situations and to examine several different parts of your body’s interior.
Lymph nodes sometimes lose their protective function and become reservoirs for bacteria; for example, tonsils—which are also lymph nodes—serve as a defense at the throat entrance but can harbor bacteria from frequent colds and throat inflammation, leading to escalating throat issues, indicating loss of function requiring removal.
A normal-sized lymph node measures less than one centimeter in diameter; key factors include location, size, consistency, duration, and growth rate. Lymph nodes may enlarge due to immune responses to infections (bacteria or viruses), inflammatory involvement (lymphadenitis), or infiltration by neoplastic cells via lymphatic or bloodstream spread (metastases). Peripheral lymphadenopathy commonly occurs across all age groups and often raises biopsy dilemmas, though thorough clinical evaluation can avoid unnecessary biopsies in most cases.
Peripheral lymph nodes may enlarge due to inflammation or tumors; any non-inflammatory enlargement warrants systematic examination and detailed analysis. When a patient presents with enlarged lymph nodes, initial palpation assesses benign versus potentially malignant features. Routine blood tests help rule out or confirm infection, while ultrasound provides precise characterization of nodes, changes, or tumors, enabling safe ultrasound-guided puncture.
Ultrasound distinguishes between benign and malignant lymph nodes; if malignancy is suspected, cytological aspiration biopsy—sampling under ultrasound guidance—is performed, followed by cytological evaluation to confirm benign or malignant enlargement.
