X-ray intravenous urography

X-ray diagnostics is one of the oldest and most commonly used diagnostic methods in medicine. It is a technique that uses electromagnetic radiation in the form of X-rays to obtain images of the internal structures of the body. X-ray diagnostics is non-invasive and fast, which makes it useful in diagnosing various diseases and conditions. In X-ray diagnostics, the patient stands, lies or sits in front of the X-ray machine, and the body is exposed to a small amount of ionizing radiation. X-rays pass through the body and create an image on a special film or on a digital sensor located on the other side of the patient. Bones, internal organs and soft tissues can be seen in the images. X-ray diagnostics is relatively cheap and fast and is available in almost all hospitals and medical institutions. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially if the procedure is repeated more often. For this reason, it is usually avoided in diagnosing pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are used.

What is X-ray Intravenous Urography?

Intravenous urography (IVU) is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize the upper and lower urinary tract. IVU is usually performed using X-rays, after the patient has had a contrast medium injected into a vein in their arm.

The IVU procedure usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. First, the patient is given a contrast medium injection into a vein. Then, X-rays are taken at various stages of the procedure, usually within a few minutes after the contrast medium is injected and after the contrast medium has spread throughout the upper and lower urinary tract. The doctor or radiologist may ask the patient to hold their breath or change position during the scan to get the best possible images.

IVU is usually performed to diagnose problems such as kidney stones, tumors, narrowings, or blockages in the urinary tract. The procedure is relatively safe and rarely causes complications. However, as with all medical procedures, there may be risks, including allergic reactions to the contrast medium, adverse effects of X-rays, or infection if a needle is used to inject the contrast medium.

Before the procedure, the patient will usually need to prepare in a similar way to other diagnostic procedures that involve contrast media, such as a CT or MRI procedure. This usually involves restricting food and fluid intake before the procedure, and sometimes the patient will need to take laxatives or have an enema to ensure the bowels are empty.

Diagnostic X-rays, such as pelvic X-rays, are relatively cheap and quick, and are available in almost all hospitals and medical facilities. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially if the procedure is repeated more often. For this reason, it is usually avoided in diagnosing diseases in pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are used. With the rapid progress of technology, there are other more advanced diagnostic methods that are safer and provide better quality images than X-ray diagnostics. Nevertheless, X-ray diagnostics remains one of the basic diagnostic methods used in many situations.
