X-ray of the mastoid

RTG (X-ray) diagnostics is one of the oldest and most commonly used diagnostic methods in medicine. It is a technique that uses electromagnetic radiation in the form of X-rays to obtain images of internal body structures. RTG diagnostics is non-invasive and quick, making it useful in diagnosing various diseases and conditions. In RTG diagnostics, the patient stands, lies, or sits in front of the X-ray machine, and the body is exposed to a small amount of ionizing radiation. X-rays pass through the body and create an image on a special film or digital sensor located on the other side of the patient. Images can show bones, internal organs, and soft tissues. RTG diagnostics is relatively inexpensive and quick and is available in almost all hospitals and medical institutions. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially with frequent repetition of the procedure. Therefore, it is usually avoided in diagnosing pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are applied.

What is Mastoid RTG?

RTG of the mastoid is a diagnostic imaging procedure used to assess the condition and anatomy of the mastoid bone, which is located behind the ear. The mastoid bone contains an air-filled cavity connected to the inner ear. This procedure is often performed when mastoid inflammation or other problems affecting this bone are suspected.

The examination called RTG of the mastoid is performed using an X-ray beam that passes through the area behind the ear and creates images of the mastoid bone. The procedure is quick and usually takes only a few minutes. The patient may be given instructions on how to keep the head in a certain position during imaging.

Conditions Detected

RTG diagnostics of the mastoid can help detect various conditions, including:

  • Mastoiditis: a condition that occurs when the cavity in the mastoid bone becomes inflamed
  • Trauma: injuries affecting the mastoid bone and surrounding areas
  • Anatomical abnormalities: irregularities in the structure of the mastoid bone that can cause problems
  • Tumors: growths in the mastoid bone that can be benign or malignant

Results of mastoid RTG are usually available within a few hours or days after the procedure, depending on the urgency of the examination. Your doctor will inform you of the results and recommend further steps if necessary.
