RTG (X-ray) diagnostics is one of the oldest and most commonly used diagnostic methods in medicine. It is a technique that uses electromagnetic radiation in the form of X-rays to obtain images of internal body structures. RTG diagnostics is non-invasive and quick, making it useful in diagnosing various diseases and conditions. In RTG diagnostics, the patient stands, lies, or sits in front of the X-ray machine, and the body is exposed to a small amount of ionizing radiation. X-rays pass through the body and create an image on a special film or digital sensor located on the other side of the patient. Images can show bones, internal organs, and soft tissues. RTG diagnostics is relatively inexpensive and quick and is available in almost all hospitals and medical institutions. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially with frequent repetition of the procedure. Therefore, it is usually avoided in diagnosing pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are applied.

What is Pharyngoesophagography?

RTG of the pharynx and esophagus – pharyngoesophagography is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize the upper part of the digestive system – the pharynx (pharynx) and esophagus (esophagus). The procedure is often used to diagnose problems such as swallowing or esophageal issues, inflammation, or tumors in the pharynx and esophagus area.

During pharyngoesophagography, the patient will drink a special contrast medium (usually barium sulfate) that will enable the radiologist to see the pharynx and esophagus area on X-ray images. The procedure is usually performed in an X-ray room or fluoroscopic room. Fluoroscopy is a diagnostic method that allows continuous viewing of internal body structures in real time.

Procedure Details

During the procedure, the patient will usually need to turn into different positions to obtain images from different angles. The radiologist will observe how the contrast medium passes through the pharynx and esophagus, which will enable diagnosis of any problems such as strictures or obstructions, reflux problems, inflammation, or tumors.

Pharyngoesophagography is usually performed if there are swallowing problems, sensations of blockage in the throat, or chest pains. However, the procedure can be uncomfortable or even painful for patients suffering from severe conditions such as pharyngitis or esophagitis. Therefore, it is important to inform the doctor about any allergies, swallowing problems, or other medical conditions before starting the procedure.

After the procedure, the patient may feel slight discomfort or bloating in the stomach, but this should disappear quickly. It is important for patients to follow the instructions given by doctors or radiologists after the procedure to avoid complications and ensure the most comfortable recovery.

RTG diagnostics, such as pelvis RTG, is relatively inexpensive and quick and is available in almost all hospitals and medical institutions. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially with frequent repetition of the procedure. Therefore, it is usually avoided in diagnosing diseases in pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are applied. With the rapid advancement of technology, there are other more advanced diagnostic methods that are safer and provide better image quality than RTG diagnostics. However, RTG diagnostics remains one of the basic diagnostic methods used in many situations.
