RTG (X-ray) diagnostics is one of the oldest and most commonly used diagnostic methods in medicine. It is a technique that uses electromagnetic radiation in the form of X-rays to obtain images of internal body structures. RTG diagnostics is non-invasive and quick, making it useful in diagnosing various diseases and conditions. In RTG diagnostics, the patient stands, lies, or sits in front of the X-ray machine, and the body is exposed to a small amount of ionizing radiation. X-rays pass through the body and create an image on a special film or digital sensor located on the other side of the patient. Images can show bones, internal organs, and soft tissues. RTG diagnostics is relatively inexpensive and quick and is available in almost all hospitals and medical institutions. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially with frequent repetition of the procedure. Therefore, it is usually avoided in diagnosing pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are applied.
Sacroiliac joints are the connections between the sacrum (the lower part of the spine located below the last lumbar vertebra) and the iliac bones (large pelvic bones). These joints are a type of joint that allows minimal movement and pelvic stability, which is important for spine stability and the lower body. Sacroiliac joints are very strong and stable, connected by ligaments that further increase their strength and stability. Problems with these joints can cause pain in the lower back and pelvis, so their maintenance and proper function are of great importance for maintaining spine health and the entire body.
RTG of sacroiliac joints can be used to assess the condition of these joints. This procedure is usually performed in the supine position, and the image can be taken in anteroposterior (AP) or posteroanterior (PA) direction.
On the image, the position of the sacrum and iliac bones, as well as the condition of the joints themselves, can be seen. Irregularities in the shape, size, or position of the joints, presence of deformities, osteoporosis, or other changes that may indicate problems with the sacroiliac joints can be noticed.
However, it is important to note that an RTG image is not always sufficient for a complete diagnosis of sacroiliac joint problems, and other diagnostic methods such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bone scanning (scintigraphy), or ultrasound may be used.
