X-ray voiding cystourethography

X-ray diagnostics is one of the oldest and most commonly used diagnostic methods in medicine. It is a technique that uses electromagnetic radiation in the form of X-rays to obtain images of the internal structures of the body. X-ray diagnostics is non-invasive and fast, which makes it useful in diagnosing various diseases and conditions. In X-ray diagnostics, the patient stands, lies or sits in front of the X-ray machine, and the body is exposed to a small amount of ionizing radiation. X-rays pass through the body and create an image on a special film or on a digital sensor located on the other side of the patient. Bones, internal organs and soft tissues can be seen in the images. X-ray diagnostics is relatively cheap and fast and is available in almost all hospitals and medical institutions. However, exposure to ionizing radiation can be harmful, especially if the procedure is repeated more often. For this reason, it is usually avoided in diagnosing pregnant women and children, and other, safer diagnostic methods are used.

What is X-ray voiding cystourethography?

X-ray voiding cystourethography (MCU) is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize the bladder and urethra. This procedure is usually performed when problems in the urinary system are suspected, such as recurrent urinary tract infections, incontinence, or problems with urination.

During the procedure, the patient is first injected with a contrast medium into the bladder using a catheter that is inserted into the urethra. Next, X-rays are taken at different stages of the procedure, usually when the patient fills with urine (filled bladder) and when the patient empties of urine (empty bladder).

The goal of the procedure is to identify problems such as narrowings, blockages or other abnormalities in the urinary system. During the procedure, the radiologist or doctor may ask the patient to change position to get the best possible images or may use fluoroscopy (a technique that uses a small amount of x-rays in a continuous mode) to monitor the movement of the contrast medium through the urinary tract.

The MCU procedure is relatively safe and rarely causes complications. However, as with all medical procedures involving contrast medium, there is a risk of allergic reactions. Also, urethral catheterization may cause discomfort or pain during or after the procedure.

Before the procedure, the patient will usually need to prepare in a similar way to other diagnostic procedures that involve contrast media, such as a CT or MRI procedure. This may include restricting food and fluid intake prior to the procedure, and sometimes the patient will need to take laxatives or have an enema procedure to ensure the bowels are empty. It is important that patients follow the instructions given to them by the radiologists before the procedure begins to ensure that the procedure is performed as successfully as possible and that possible complications are avoided.
