Head CT

CT – Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic method that uses X-rays to create detailed, three-dimensional images of internal organs and structures. During the scanning process, the patient is placed on a table that moves slowly through a cylindrical machine, through which X-rays pass from multiple angles. A special program then combines the resulting images to create a three-dimensional image of the inside of the body. CT is used to diagnose a variety of health problems, including detecting tumors, traumatic injuries, blood clots, and other conditions. It is important to note that CT uses X-rays, which can represent a certain dose of radiation, so its use must be carefully considered in relation to the benefits and risks.

What does CT head involve?

CT head is a diagnostic procedure used to obtain detailed images of the brain, skull, and other head structures. This examination is usually performed in diagnostic centers or hospitals, and uses a low level of X-rays to create an image of the inside of the head. This enables doctors to visualize and identify problematic areas in the brain and other head structures.

The CT head procedure usually takes about 10-15 minutes. The patient lies on their back on a table that slides into a tunnel that emits X-rays. During the procedure, the patient may be told to hold their breath for a few seconds so that images can be made without head movement. Sometimes it is possible for patients to be injected with contrast agent, which is administered into the vein to improve visibility of blood vessels in the brain.

CT head is usually used to diagnose numerous brain diseases and conditions, including tumors, bleeding, infections, trauma, and epilepsy. It can also be used in emergency situations such as head injuries or suspicion of brain bleeding, after various accidents where head damage to patients is suspected.

Preparation for CT head is usually not necessary. However, you should inform your doctor about all medications you are taking and health problems, especially if you have kidney problems or iodine allergies.

This type of CT examination is a non-invasive procedure that is usually not painful. The patient does not feel the X-rays, but some people may feel discomfort when the contrast agent is injected into the vein.

CT head uses a low dose of radiation, which means there is minimal risk of harmful effects. However, if the procedure is repeated frequently, it may increase the risk of radiation exposure. Also, if contrast agent is used, there is a small risk of allergic reactions or kidney damage in people with kidney problems.

CT head results are interpreted by radiologists who specialize in interpreting medical images. After receiving the images, radiologists can identify problematic areas, determine the size and shape of tumors, assess the degree of bleeding, or assess damage caused by head injury.
