CT diagnostics

Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic imaging method that uses X-rays to create detailed, three-dimensional images of internal organs and structures. During the scanning process, the patient lies on a table that gently moves through a cylindrical apparatus, through which X-rays pass from multiple angles, and specialized software combines the resulting images to produce a three-dimensional view of the body’s interior.

CT is used to diagnose various health problems, including the detection of tumors, traumatic injuries, blood clots, and other conditions.

It is important to note that CT employs X-rays, which involve a certain radiation dose, so its application must be carefully weighed against the benefits and risks.

What is CT diagnostics?

CT diagnostics, or computed tomography, is a medical procedure in which X-rays and computer technology are used to obtain detailed images of the internal structures of the body. This technology enables doctors to identify problematic areas, assess the severity of the condition, and recommend optimal treatment. CT diagnostics is one of the most common diagnostic methods in modern medicine and has a very high success rate.

Traditional X-ray machines use a fixed tube to direct X-rays to one place. As X-rays travel through the body, different tissues absorb them in different amounts. Tissue of greater density creates a whiter image than other tissues on a black film background. X-rays produce 2D images.

How long does the examination take? You should usually plan for one hour for the CT scan. Most of that time is for preparations. The scan itself can take between 10 and 30 minutes or less. Generally, you can resume your activities after the doctor or medical technician says it’s safe for you, usually after they finish the scan and check the images.

What happens during the examination?

During the CT examination, you will lie on a table (like a bed). CT scans can be done with or without contrast. Contrast refers to a substance taken by mouth or injected that makes certain organs or tissues being studied more visible. The scanner images the area that the healthcare worker needs to see. Unlike MRI scans, CT scanning is quiet.
