Ultrasound diagnostics, also termed sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is an imaging method utilizing sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. These images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and guiding treatment of various diseases and conditions. Most ultrasound examinations are performed using an ultrasound device externally on the body, though some involve inserting a small device inside the body.
Ultrasound is a non-invasive test, more precisely a medical diagnostic method. The ultrasound image is alternatively called a sonogram. Ultrasound employs high-frequency sound waves to create images or video recordings of internal organs or other soft tissues, such as blood vessels, in real time. Ultrasound enables healthcare workers to “see” soft tissue details within the body without making any incisions. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation. Although most people associate ultrasound with pregnancy, healthcare workers use ultrasound for diverse situations and to examine several different parts of the body’s interior.
Ultrasound can assist physicians in diagnosing a broad spectrum of health issues, including abnormal growths such as tumors or cancer, blood clots, enlarged spleen, ectopic pregnancy (when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus), gallstones, kidney or bladder stones, cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation).
