Ergometry

Ergometry represents a test used to assess heart function during physical exertion. During the test, the person sits or walks on a treadmill or pedals on a bicycle while effort level, blood pressure, and heart rhythm measured. Test typically performed as part of cardiology assessment to detect presence of cardiac problems, vascular stenosis (narrowing), or similar pathologies, frequently used for diagnosing and monitoring heart and blood vessel conditions, as well as assessing physical fitness and effectiveness of rehabilitation programs.

How is Ergometry Performed?

Ergometry can be performed in various ways, depending on ergometer type and testing objective. Generally, ergometry conducted as follows:

  1. Patient preparation – before ergometry, patient examined to determine suitability for testing. Patient also needs to be accustomed to physical activity and have light meal before testing.
  2. Electrode placement and blood pressure measurement – before test begins, electrodes placed on patient to measure electrocardiogram (ECG) during testing. Blood pressure also measured.
  3. Test performance – patient performs exercises on selected ergometer (bicycle or treadmill), with speed and resistance adjusted to achieve desired target pace. During test, patient continuously monitored and parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, oxygen consumption, and blood lactic acid measured.
  4. Test completion – when test ends, patient gradually slows down and recovery monitored.
  5. Results analysis – after test completion, doctor analyzes data to assess patient’s physical capacity, optimal exertion level, and cardiac disease risk.

Several ergometer types exist: Rowing ergometer – used to simulate water rowing and measures striking power and speed on water. Bicycle ergometer – used to simulate cycling and measures speed, resistance, and power. Running ergometer – used to simulate treadmill running and measures speed, distance, and calories burned during exercise. Handball ergometer – used to simulate handball game, measuring speed, distance, and calories burned during exercise.

Ergometry Risks

Like any physical activity, certain risks exist with ergometry. Some most common risks include: blood pressure drop during ergometry (blood pressure may suddenly fall, causing dizziness), muscle or joint injuries (during exercise, muscles and joints may become injured, especially if machine setting or weights incorrect), fatigue (ergometry may cause fatigue in persons unaccustomed to exercise or previously injured), respiratory problems (if person suffers from asthma or other respiratory issues, breathing difficulty possible during ergometry). Ergometry objective proves assessing physical fitness and cardiac disease risk, therefore important to perform ergometric test exclusively under medical professional supervision who monitors key body parameters during exercise to avoid potential risk.
