CT of bones or joints can be used to guide a doctor or surgeon during procedures such as biopsy. They are precise and sensitive in detecting small bone fractures, periosteal reactions (bone infections and inflammation), and degenerative bone diseases. They are important in planning certain types of therapy and surgeries, as well as in follow-up treatment to determine whether the patient’s body is responding to treatment. CT examination can be used to detect cysts or infections in the body. They can also identify bone structures within the body and precisely measure bone density. CT scanning is often used for rapid patient assessment after an accident to identify traumatic internal injuries.

A joint is an important part of the body where two or more bones meet to enable movement. Almost every bone in the body meets at least one other bone at a joint. The shape of the joint depends on its function. Generally speaking, the more movement possible through a joint, the greater the risk of injury to it. This is because a greater range of motion reduces the strength of the joint. Joints are divided into:

Immovable – two or more bones are in close contact, but no movement can occur – for example, skull bones. Skull joints are called sutures.

Slightly movable – two or more bones are held together so tightly that only limited movements are allowed – for example, vertebrae.

Freely movable – most joints in the human body are of this type. Movement is the purpose of the joint.
