Nefrološki pregled - poliklinika Atrijum Sarajevo

Nephrology examination

A nephrological examination is a detailed specialist assessment of kidney and urinary system function. This examination is crucial for early detection of kidney diseases, their monitoring and prevention of more serious complications.

The kidneys play an important role in maintaining the balance of fluids and electrolytes, regulating blood pressure, excreting harmful substances, but also in creating hormones that affect the production of red blood cells and bone health.

Unfortunately, kidney diseases often progress without obvious symptoms, and the first signs may only appear at an advanced stage. For this reason, a nephrological examination is especially important in persons with an increased risk or in those who already have existing chronic diseases.

What does a nephrological examination involve?

The nephrological examination begins with a detailed patient interview (medical history), during which the physician gathers important information about:

  • Patient’s overall health status
  • Existing chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)
  • Appearance of swelling on the face, legs, or around the eyes
  • Dietary habits, fluid intake, and medication use
  • Changes in urination (frequency, color, odor, pain)

Following the interview, a clinical examination follows, which includes blood pressure measurement, assessment of swelling (edema), abdominal examination, and evaluation of other body areas.

When is a nephrological examination needed?

A nephrological examination is recommended in the following situations:

  • Presence of elevated blood pressure
  • Long-standing diabetes
  • Swelling on the face, arms, or legs
  • Changes in urination (frequency, pain, foam, blood)
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Unexplained fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite
  • Family history of kidney disease
  • Long-term use of medications that may harm the kidneys

Importance of regular check-ups

Regular nephrological check-ups enable detection of kidney disease in early stages, when it is possible to slow or completely halt its progression. Timely detection of kidney damage reduces the risk of complications, including development of chronic kidney failure and need for dialysis.
