Prostate ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive test, more precisely a medical diagnostic method. The ultrasound image is also called a sonogram. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images or videos of internal organs or other soft tissues, such as blood vessels, in real time. Ultrasound enables healthcare professionals to “see” details of soft tissues inside your body without making any incisions. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation. Although most people associate ultrasound with pregnancy, healthcare professionals use ultrasound for various situations and to examine several different parts of your body’s interior.

Prostate Ultrasound Overview

Prostate ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure to examine the prostate gland—a male gland located below the bladder that produces seminal fluid—using a linear ultrasound probe placed on the lower abdomen above the pubic bone.

Preparation Requirements

Preparation typically involves drinking a large amount of water to fill the bladder for better visibility; no bowel cleansing is needed with a linear probe, but consult your physician for specific instructions.

Procedure Comfort and Duration

The procedure is usually painless as the probe is external, avoiding discomfort from internal exams; notify your doctor if any unease occurs. It generally lasts 15 to 30 minutes, depending on complexity and patient needs.

Diagnostic Capabilities

Ultrasound visualizes prostate size, abnormalities, bladder status, and related parameters through the abdominal wall to detect prostate-related issues.

Recommendations and Safety

Recommended for men with symptoms like frequent urination, difficulty urinating, blood in urine or semen, or other prostate abnormalities, and as routine screening for those over 50 at higher prostate cancer risk. It is safe and non-invasive with no serious side effects, though mild discomfort may occur.
